BOP Consulting helped set the direction for the UK archive sector, creating a unifying vision that responds to digital transformation and secures the future of the nation’s documentary heritage.

The National Archives safeguards over 1,000 years of the UK’s records. It supports archival services across the country and preserves the nation’s heritage. The organisation also enables research and promotes transparency and democratic accountability.

To respond to rapid digital change and evolving sector needs, the UK government asked The National Archives to develop a new strategic vision. BOP was commissioned to deliver this plan, working with the steering group and senior leadership to set a clear, shared direction for the future.

Our work included a comprehensive review of key policy documents and strategic plans, followed by a nationwide programme of stakeholder engagement, including surveys, interviews, and roundtables.

This work has provided the archive sector with a clear, collective vision for the years ahead grounded in evidence, shaped by diverse voices, and designed to meet the challenges ahead. It equips The National Archives and its partners with a roadmap to strengthen resilience, embrace digital innovation, and ensure the UK’s documentary heritage continues to inspire, inform, and serve future generations.
