Economics and Impact

Over our decade-long evaluation partnership with the BFI, we've helped demonstrate its significant impact on the UK film industry.

The British Film Institute (BFI) is central to the success of UK film—supporting the industry through technological change and addressing enduring structural barriers.

Over the last ten years we have evaluated the following programmes across the BFI’s portfolio:

  • BFI Film Academy: which aims to jump-start careers, fostering early representation in filmmaking, and supporting the screen talent development pipeline.
  • BFI Network: which nurtures emerging talent through funding, creation, and professional support, making the UK screen industry more reflective of its diverse populations.
  • BFI International Fund: which aims to boost global engagement and collaboration, sharing UK stories worldwide.
  • BFI Global Screen Fund: which is designed to amplify international development, production, distribution, and promotional opportunities for the UK’s independent screen sector.

Evidence from these BFI evaluations continues to inform how it supports UK filmmakers and sustains a thriving, representative film industry.
